My First Shift

March 24th, 2006 Posted in Uncategorized

Fucking hate Wordpress.  Lost a beautifully long post about my first day opening Starbucks as a shift.  Fuck you Wordpress.

Anyways, let us recap, while my stomach turns in anger over losing the post.  Wednesday was my first time to open my Starbucks as a shift…
I opened the store a few minutes early, turned off the alarm.  It starts going off!  I try again, nothing.  I call Callie like 10 times for help, the alarm company calls to ask if everythign is ok, yeah, they turn it off, things are going well.  I open the store on the computer, blah blah… the alarm goes off again!  This time I am able to turn it off myself.

I open the safe, easy peasy.  Now it won’t close and is telling me there is a safe violation “close safe”.  But it won’t close.

Phew, everything back in order.

Wait, no schedule of who is coming on, when and where they are positioned.  No idea how long they are there, when they get breaks and when/if they get lunches.  So I start calculating this information in my head as soon as they come in for their shifts.  What a headache!  (my math seems to be improving hehe)

We get quite the rush, zeke and michael are on the bar whipping out drinks like nobodies business, Gloria is floating the lobby cleaning up a spill and doing a re-brew, Katherine is making whipped creams, refilling milks, cleaning up the pastry case and ringing in orders (whew!) and I am working the register, calling down drinks, making a coffee traveller, gathering the fourteen bottles of water this woman just ordered along with her fourteen pastries.  I get a call for a transfer from another Starbucks, they need coffee filters, done.

Everyone got their drinks, their pastries and their legendary service.  Everyone got their ten and thirty minute breaks.  Everyone worked like a freaking machine.  It was incredible.

I got the deposit done, my first ever and without the proper training (read none) but with some help from Micheal and Callie (thank God for Callie).  It was an incredible rush.  I loved it!

I was very nervous that I would let everyone down, but…
