Disgusting

April 27th, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Just My Rant, Just My Thoughts

Former Columbia Police Officer Steven Rios, who was convicted in May 2005 for the murder of MU student Jesse Valencia, will receive a new trial.

The Western District of the Missouri Court of Appeals announced its reversal of Rios’ conviction Friday morning. Beth Riggert, spokesperson for the high court, said two hearsay statements entered into evidence during the original trial were used to prove motive. The court of appeals decided that those statements both made by Valencia  were not covered by any of the exceptions that allow hearsay to be used as evidence.

Rios was accused of slitting the throat of 23-year-old Valencia in the East Campus neighborhood on June 5, 2004. He was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

A Clay County jury found him guilty after nine hours of deliberation. Boone County Circuit Judge Ellen Roper sentenced Rios to life without parole. He appealed in July 2005. The appeals court heard oral arguments one year later.

Special Prosecutor Morley Swingle tried the case because of the relationship between the Boone County prosecutor’s office and Rios in his capacity as a police officer. Swingle could not be reached this morning about the appeals court’s decision.

Culinary, Genius

Friday night I am going to a D to the E to the M-O-C-R-A-T party hosted by Mark. It’s basically a chance to celebrate the dems for taking the house and senate. It will definitely be a fun fun fun event.

Being Justin… I felt the need to add something to this party. I am a party thrower lover and if I can get my hands into any party organization situation (rhymed, just reminding you) I love to hop on, even if my expertise wasn’t requested haha.

Remember the amazing Brothel parties I used to throw? I’m made to party and to organize said parties.

So what could I do for this party? How about cakes?

I went out today and bought a $400 Kitchenaid at an INCREDIBLE discount. Everybody, run to Kohl’s and save $200! Plus $40 back in Kohl’s Cash and $60 for Kitchenaid.com purchases on accessories for your new stand mixer. It’s a first class deal.

DSC_4819.JPG

So far I have made three cheese cakes, tomorrow I will be baking the other two cakes and putting it all together that night and the next day right before the party. This is going to be one HUGE feat.

The cake on the far left will be on its own. It isn’t close to being finished but won’t be too much different.

The other two cheesecakes… now that’s another story. They are going to be a part of a four layer cake, they are just two of the layers. I won’t get into too much detail, let’s just say it is going to be amazing.

I will post pics tomorrow after Geoff and I finish these bad boys off. Not even he knows exactly what I have in mind… muhahahaha!

The Internet, Bank on It?

I have been a customer of Bank of America since I was ten years old and with the same banking institution. In fact, I have been with Bank of America since it was Nation’s Bank. I remember that transition, never mind that I was in elementary school.

I even still have my first account, it’s a savings account held under the eye of my father and the money in it came from my earnings from Austin County Fair Auctions and birthdays, Christmas, the essential money making opportunities for young kids (cutting the grass for grandma…).

Perhaps I was a little different than most kids, I had my own business at age twelve where I pulled in a few hundred dollars a month. That is small dough to adults and other people who held bank accounts at Bank of America, ahem, Nation’s Bank, but to me is was a big big deal.

There was a problem though. I lived in small town Bellville Texas, population, just under 4,000. There was no Nation’s Bank. If I wanted to do any banking, I had to catch a ride to Houston with my dad. Intro Online Banking.

I do almost every single bit of my banking online and only go to banks now to deposit checks from relatives at Christmas time and even then, I don’t step into the bank. I pay my bills through my current accounts with Bank of America; my cable bill, my Target Corp. card, my Express for Men card, my CapitalOne card my utilities… It’s all there.

In fact, Just an hour ago I paid a months worth of bills, a month early through the delayed payment system. Post-dating checks doesn’t work anymore, companies will cash them as they get them, but with online banking I am able to post date payments and the institutions don’t even know it!

However, there are some scary aspects to online banking. Many people question the safety of online banking, hackers can crack your password… banks have been in the news recently losing thousands of SS numbers to data thieves. But you don’t need to worry so much about these Unfair Bank Charges. Your money is FDIC insured whether you bank online or offline and banks often have serious security systems in place and backup plans in the case that something bad does happen.

I have fallen victim to the electronic bank robber, a number of times. You should always check your banking institution’s policies in regards to these losses. Bank of America replaced my money instantly and resolved the entire situation in 30 days, and they guarantee that.

But what if the bank is the thief? The last link I posted, Unfair Bank Charges has some really great information about your rights if you become a victim of an inside job. I didn’t know this but the Brits really have it good:

Under the Data Protection Act – they only have 40 days to provide you with the information that you have requested. And you can legally claim 8% APR on each charge for that full period. So don’t worry about waiting because the longer you have to wait, the more money you will get back out of them. If you don’t get the information that you have requested within the 40 days, you need to report them for a breach. You report them to the information commissioner.

Damn, I live in America. We have similar rights and your bank is required to reveal those rights to you.

There are sometimes fees that come with online banking. You should check your bank’s fees and limitations to online banking and look around for loop holes.

  • I’m a student and by signing up for a CampusEdge account, I get free a free account; Generation D would demand nothing less I suppose.
  • I also get a free online bill pay by having my paycheck electronically deposited. Those fees attached to banking can almost always be avoided, through some creative banking tactics.
  • I also got a great deal on a credit card through Bank of America because of my student status and free overdraft protection.

Wells Fargo and Washington Mutual have similar offerings.

Well, I’m off to do some banking. I’m saving up for the new iPhone, so far I’ve got around $500 in the bank. That’s one more benefit to online banking, it doesn’t burn holes in your pocket ;-)

Sex, Politics, Colbert

April 24th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

This picture on the cover of Gentleman’s Quarterly frightened me… and made me laugh so hard, I had to hide in TigerTech in the bookstore.

Stephen Colbert - GQ Magazine Cover

This man is amazing.  Has anyone gone from extra on a cable “news” show to the success of Stephen Colbert, so quickly?  John Stewart is pretty damn amazing, popular and an awesome power in his own right, but Colbert is something different.

He has had bridges named after him, in other countries.  He has hosted the Whitehouse Correspondence dinner.  He had the number two audio book on iTunes for months.  He is the mascot of a hockey team, in Canada.  He has an eagle named after him.  He…  He can do anything.

What’s The Point?

April 23rd, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized
  • If you are going to be drunk so much of the time, what’s the point?
  • If you are going to be high so much of the time, what’s the point?
  • If you are going to be fighting so much of the time, what’s the point?
  • If you are going to be in deep denial so much of the time, what’s the point?

Whatever the point, perhaps it is none of my business.

What Does This Even Mean?

April 23rd, 2007 | 4 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Go to Hitt Street Parking garage and take a look at the sign above the parking pass machines.

DSC_4807.JPG

Focus on the last three lines, and then the top two of the three.

“Coin Only Until ID Card”

What exactly does this mean? Coin only? Well, yes you can pay with US minted coins, from nickels to quarters, maybe even gold dollars. That part isn’t really hard to get. I could live with “Coin Only”… except that you can use your student ID card. It does acknowledge that… but why “Until ID Card”. Shouldn’t say, “or ID Card”? The use of “until” implies that you can use coins “until” you have an ID card… or you can use coins “until” it has had too many coins?… yeeesh!

Ok, next line.

“System Operational: Approx 3-99″

Well, this could mean many things. It could mean that there are anywhere between 3 and 99 systems that distribute the parking passes. But why would you need to know that? It could mean that they are functional 0.03003~% of the time. This sounds more like it. Of the nine machines (that I have seen) that we have in that parking garage, only about four of them work at any given time, 5 are permentantly broken (haven’t worked since I started parking in there). Course, operational only .03% of the time would be ridiculous, even for Mizzou standards. Does it mean it was initiated March of 1999? All of my searching finds that construction on the Hitt Street garage started late 1996 and cost $12,000,000.

I don’t know, it all makes no sense to me.

Taking a Break

April 23rd, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

I’ve been working out for a bit and decided to hop on a computer over in the lounge to get a break. Lucky you huh? Lucky me, I am kinda sick to my stomach from the elliptical. Burning 450 calories in thirty minutes will take a good bit out of you. DSC_4803.JPG Not a ton of calories but enough. Next up is arms and chest then work on leg press, calves and abs.

As of right now, I am carless but not especially careless. For about a week my car has made this jarring noise when making a turn. Turns out my power steering pump is going out. Caught it just in time, had I waited a few more days I probably would have been driving and BAM! No ability to really steer without some great effort. Ever driven a car without power steering? Ever driven a car built for power steering and having that go out? Makes it about twice as hard to steer.

My sunroof is also stuck open, no good huh? And my locks aren’t working right all the time, the power lock portion that is. Plus I tore off the door handle in an ice storm and the paint is kinda fucked up on the front right and rear left (accident that we weren’t told about when we bought the car).

I was all set to buy a new car, checked out a few new/used Hondas. It is amazing how little value they lose. DSC_4797.JPG A 2004 Honda Civic with 28,000 miles is priced at $16,800. A 2007 Nissan Altima is $13,880! Wow. Go Honda.

Getting the steering fixed and the sunroof is going to cost me around $500, yuck. But it is cheaper than a new car. If one more thing goes wrong with the car though, it’s all over. I mean, I have put 188,000 miles on this thing. 188,000 miles. Jesus, that’s a lot of driving. It have definitely gotten my money’s worth.

My next car will be a Honda Accord for sure. I love these things, drive them to your own death, they last forever!

I have put a few new pics on today. I’m sorry for being a lazy ass with the blog and not posting new pics in so long. School has gotten busy and I’m actually getting hours at work. It’s crazy actually having money. Wow, what a concept. Instead of an average of 4-6 hours a week I’m pulling in around 15-20. Goodness Graceous! I”m not sure how good the pictures look, I’m typing this on a PC (yuck!) that is running Internet Explorer (yuck!) and the images on here look really jaggedy… chopped up. I resized them which would explain that but really, they should look fine. I am hoping it is just the low resolution on this computer because on my computers, all running at high resolutions, the pics look great.

I have a boyfriend. I figure I can safely say that now. I’m hiding this in a post kinda… not really hiding it but not being my typical self and broadcasting my entire life out there. Keeping things kinda somber, at least in regards to my personal personal life. He is a wonderful guy; smart, kind, hilarious, fun to talk to and hot (I can say that).

Ok, off to finish up my workout.

Yeah, maybe that kid shouldn’t be talking like that, so young and all. But you have to admit, pretty fucking hilarious.
