Ocean View

July 9th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Just My Life, Just My Thoughts

The ocean catches my eye from my window 22,000 feet in the air flying south from North Carolina.  Even at this distance the ocean seems to call me, each wave draws me to its salty shores.

I feel most comfortable when I am near the ocean.  My grandfather is a native of the Cayman Islands where the majority of my paternal family still lives.  These small Caribbean Islands represent what I feel to be the most beautiful beaches and waters you can find.  Clown fish crush the red, white and pink coral into beautiful sands and the crystal clear waters invite you to snorkel into a totally different world.

In Texas, where I grew up, we were never more than a couple of hours from the water.  My grandfather owned a beach house on the waters of Crystal Beach.  These waters, unlike those of my paternal grandfather’s home, were not tranquel.  The sands were not pink and white and the shores were often littered with dying jelly fish, seaweed and tar slicks from the oil that naturally oozed out of the cracks, deep within the Gulf of Mexico.

The waters were so dirty that snorkeling was impossible.  The waves seemed to give up as they approached you on the edge of the water, failing to make much of an impact on the sand.  Wild life was limited to seagulls, jellyfish and the occasional crab.

It was still water.

In Hawaii where my family has a condo, the waters are clear, they are big and they are fun.  The waves attack the sands of the beach with vigor providing ample energy for surfers and are able to strip beaches of their sands entirely.  One of these beaches is called Mystery Sands, one day there is sand, the next rock and reef.  What beauty and power, mystique and excitement.  The wildlife here, like the Cayman Islands, is abundant.

If only there weren’t so many tourists!

When I moved to Missouri, living for the first time away from any major body of water, away from any ocean, sea or bay; I began to realize how much I loved and missed the ocean.

Then I moved to California, just thirty minutes from Bodega Bay, how wonderfully reminiscent.

Now, the waters were freezing and the mixture of the Russian River made some areas brown from the usual dark blue and the sands so hot you could barely stand to go barefoot for more than a few steps.

It was still water, beautiful, icy and crashing against the dark rocks of the Northern California shoreline.

Very rarely in our lives do we voluntarily put ourselves in control of mother nature and I can find no better example than the ocean.  What other force do we find a sport to challenge with sports such as surfing, boating and skiing?  In a world where we all seem to be grasping at any chance to take control, the ocean is our only escape.

We are forced to cover ourselves with lotion to protect from ultraviolet rays from the sun, we worry about rip tides pulling us far into the open water.  There are sharks, there are Portuguese Man-of-wars, there are sea urchins.  There are biting fish and probably the worst, those damn bunches of seaweed that seem to gravitate to your bare legs.

At every twist and turn, we put ourselves in harms way trusting the ocean will take care of us, and if it chooses otherwise, to whom are we to complain?

I think as humans we secretly crave to lose a bit of control, to put our lives in the hands of others, to not have to worry about what we do and instead relax and let nature be our guide.  In world full of doubt, where everyone is trying to get the one-up on their neighbor and it seems nothing is certain; it is sure nice to have the ocean.

It is always there, it is always changing and yet it is always the same.

Wanted… But Only Kinda

Jolie at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Sw...Image via Wikipedia

Yesterday, Micheal, Ryan and I went together to see the new Angelina Jolie blockbuster, Wanted.  It was billed as a smart, edge of your seat, action packed, assassin thriller type film.

I really wanted to see it.  Headlining the film was of course, Angelina Jolie along with Morgan Freeman and that guy everyone else knows but me, James McAvoy

The basic premise is these people have control over how their body releases adrenaline  allowing them incredible strength, vision, hearing… well everything.  Oh yeah, and they can make bullets curve into a complete circle by flipping their wrists as they shoot.

If you think that’s far fetched, how about how their get their missions…  Supposedly, The Fraternity is over a thousand years old and have been following the same codes since its inception.  One of these is how it gets its information on who to kill.  This information comes from imperfections on cloth created by a not-so-ancient-and-by-no-means-1000-years-old loom.

Yeah, the code it spits out?  It’s binary.  You know, 11101011010100001 etc.

Apparently they used an 1800 year old code, ok that works.  But how they decoded it makes no sense.  Let’s spell out one of the names it supposedly codes out.

01010111011001010111001101101100011001010111100100100000010001110110100101100010011100110110111101101110

And that’s just the name, not the Age, Weight, Sex, Height and Location that it apparently also puts out.  Bah, I just didn’t like that, could’nt it have been anything else?  Seriously…

Anyway, the action is great, the acting is good.  If it didn’t have the lead characters, if this had been full of first time actors, it would have never made a record opening weekend.  It would either have been a cult classic or a total flop (hard to tell the difference between those two).

The actors did make it watchable and at times pretty entertaining.  What I think made me so bitter was the production of the film.  A poorly thought out soundtrack matched with horrendous mixing of the tracks, overly creative camera angles meant for an art film not an action flick and the bending of physics without even an iota of magical excuse is what made this movie a C at best for me.

I really wanted to see this film, but I’m glad I saw it matinee.  Next disappointing action movie I will see is Hancock.  At least I know ahead of time that the story gets pretty weak, and at least it has Will Smith to make it work.

Always Busy

July 5th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Just My Life, Just My Thoughts

It seems like every week I’m flying out somewhere or otherwise taking a trip out of town.

Texas, Birmingham, Chicago, Kansas City, Saint Louis, San Francisco… This Monday I’m flying out to Raleigh North Carolina and giving a presentation to the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission and then Ryan will join me in Texas to spend a long weekend with my grandmother and grandfather at their home there outside of Austin.

I am really excited/nervous about the trip to Texas.  This is the first time that I have really integrated a boyfriend in my family life.  I have always wanted to do so with my past boyfriends (namely, only, Landon and Geoffrey) but a mixture of my fear and my family’s obvious distaste for that quelched any chances of something like this.

However, my family seems to just love Ryan, a lot.  I mean, why not?  He’s smart, funny, loving, cute, incredibly diligent, charming and so kind.  He has helped me grow and feel comfortable in my skin.  He is such a light in my life and my family must see that.  He emails back and forth with my grandmother and my parents ask about him everytime we talk on the phone.  How great is that?

So anyways, going to be busy traveling but it will be a lot of fun and let’s be honest, getting out of Columbia is about the best thing one can do in the summer!

All a Twitter

July 1st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Just My Nerdiness, Just My Thoughts

I’ve been using Twitter for a good while now but have been such a slacker in actually using it.  While in San Francisco I made a pledge to be more active on Twitter.

For those who don’t know what Twitter is, let me explain.

Twitter, in brief, is a social network based on instant messages to a public audience.  You “twit” when you are going to a movie, when you’re stuck at the DMV (as I have been twice in the past week) or when you want company for dinner.

As people discover your tweets, they have the option to follow you.  By following you, they will receive all of your updates to Twitter on their email, their phone, their IM or whatever other format they choose.
You can direct “tweets” at something by typing @ before the person’s name.  If I wanted to ask Nick Starr out to dinner, I might say, “@NickStarr want to get dinner at Sapporo?” and he could reply “@justex07 yeah, how about 8?”.

I could also put an open invitation for people to join me at a movie by simply twittering, “going to see the 10 o’clock showing of Wanted if anyone wants to join me”.  All of your followers will get the message and can reply to you if they plan on joining.

As you begin to acquire get a large number of followers, you essentially make it impossible to be lonely.  During South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin last year, people were Twittering about the best Bar-B-Que and ending up with over 40 people joining them at places like Stub’s for dinner!

Strangers uniting in a Web 2.0 world.  It’s something else.  It’s something great.

With the iPhone 3G coming out and all of the Twitter Apps expected in the iPhone 2.0 App Store, twitting on the go will just get easier and easier.

I am going to be researching good Twitter plugins so I can have my tweets streaming through this blog on the sidebar.  If you know of any good ones, please forward them to me through a comment on this post.

If you want to follow me on Twitter, my name is justex07 and you can find me on Twitter here.

Nothing Suprises Me

July 1st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Just My Thoughts

Besides Chris Kattan marring a woman (a pretty one at that) this whole section of the news paper just isn’t too surprising.

News is Predicable

Now who didn’t see that last one coming?  Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Mama’s Boy

June 24th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Just My Life, Just My Thoughts
Last night, Micheal, Max and I watched the movie, Mama’s Boy starring Diane Keaton who looked absolutely fabulous and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite).  Perhaps the best part was Jeff Daniels (aka Uncle Joey from Full House) and Laura Knightlinger from the most awesome show, The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman.

It’s a movie about a 29 year old kid living at home with his widowed mother, his attachment to her, his nepotism, and his inability to socialize with others.  Basically, it is about my ex boyfriend Seth.  Seriously though, we really enjoyed the movie.

We all really liked it.  You should rent it, and then let me borrow it so I can rip it.  haha.  We rented it in HD off my AppleTV.  The movie paired with some “cheap” good veggie pizza equals awesome.

Scouts Concert

Last night, after enjoying a meatless bar-b-que with Geoffrey I went off to The Blue Note to see Chase’s band, Scouts, play.

I hung around for the first band to play, headed by a feisty lesbian (broad assumption), they rocked pretty hard.  Not my particular style, but I did enjoy their sound.  I had not been to The Blue Note in a while so that was fun in itself.  Not many people were around for the first band, but as they left the stage and Scouts went on to setup, people starting coming in through the woodwork.

I watched them set up their stuff.  Glad I didn’t have to do it.

They were awesome, of course.  Just for who cares, my friend Chase is the guy directly above this picture.  It’s pretty cool, like three of the guys in the band all play percussion, keyboard and guitar.  Something like that.  I thought that was pretty awesome, but maybe that’s cause i don’t play any of those things…

I went upstairs to waste some time while their broke down their stuff and saw a sign for the women’s restroom and it totally reminded me of how Chase says “ladies”.  So… I took a picture of it.  Of course I did.

The concert was great, I look forward to hearing them play again, hopefully a longer set.  I’m also hoping to do some photography for them, just like some studio type work, but we’d need to find a cool set/place and I’d probably need to get some new strobes (read, an SB-800 or two) to do it properly.  Course, for that money, I could get an AlienBees strobe light setup which would kick 20 SB-800’s collective asses!

The Munchkins Sang it Best

June 13th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Just My Thoughts, Just My Video

I bumped into the Wicked Witch of the Midwest as she hopped on her broomstick and headed out of town.  Still, I wish the house had fallen on her, she did have great taste in shoes…

OSX 10.5.3 Major Gmail/Address Book Glitch

May 29th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Just My Nerdiness, Just My Thoughts

So I synchronized my Address Book in Leopard with my Google contact list, a new feature in OSX which came out with 10.5.3.

Unfortunately, it was a hot tranny mess.

My Address Book went from 435 people to 510 people to 47 people to 78 people… I have managed, thanks to Time Machine, to get my contacts back in order.  Except in Gmail.

Here’s where I am now.  Look left.  Sad face.

Now, I like Jim, I mean, I love???????? ????? ???????? Jim, a whole whole lot.  But damn girl, you are taking over my Gmail Contact List.

Let’s get this thing fixed Steve.

I even setup .Mac Sync to do a reset so that future syncs wouldn’t cause the same problems again but… no good.  I am hoping this time around I won’t have that trouble.

Other than that… I’m not sure what I think of of the newest rendition of Leopard.  I would like to see some more dramatic changes.

Oh well, whatever, right now I’m enraptured with the season finale of Ugly Betty and not only have they had a hilarious cameo by Lindsay Lohan but now, none other than the fucking CRAZY Naomi Campbell.

Hil-fucking-larious.  Glad to see crazy people can make fun of themselves.
