You’ve Got to be Kidding

June 14th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Just My Politics, Just My Rant

WASHINGTON (AP) — John McCain has called off a fundraiser at the home of a Texas oilman who joked about rape during a 1990 gubernatorial run in the state. The Texan, Republican Clayton Williams, made the joke during his failed campaign against Democrat Ann Richards. Williams compared rape to the weather, saying, “As long as it’s inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.”

He also compared Richards to the cattle on his ranch, saying he would “head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt.” Williams’ comments made national news at the time and remain easy to find on the Internet.

Even so, McCain’s campaign said it hadn’t known about the remarks.

Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?

Golden Gate Bridge by Kelly HobbThis is the first time for me to come back to Houston and not hang out with high school friends.  It seems that I have reached the point in my life where old friends have become forgotten friends.  I spend my time with my family and alone doing work instead of prowling the town into the late wee hours of the morning.

I was just here in March for Spring Break and my Lasik surgery and even then I had friends with whom I got to enjoy my time here.  It is amazing to me how quickly our lives change and how few of my former high school classmates have decided to stay in Houston, or even Texas altogether.

It isn’t just my high school friends either.  My friends from Mizzou seem to be moving to the coasts, primarily San Francisco and New York City/Washington DC.

And coincidently, or perhaps not, right now Ryan and I are planning our escape and what are the two top places on our list?  San Francisco (the bay area) and Washington DC.

What is that draws us all so far from the Midwest?  What is so undesirable?  The east and west coasts are significantly more expensive and the job market is much more competitive, especially for college graduates.  Housing is up to ten times more expensive on average and crime is up.

We sacrifice security, cheap housing and our set of wheels for these destinations and what’s more?  We stay there!  This isn’t a vacation.  On top of that, we recruit.  I can’t count the number of people that moved to San Francisco after I did.

Alas, until Ryan and I pack our things and move to the coasts of California or the Capitol City, we will be rehearsing our goodbyes as our dwindling number of friends continue to venture out of Middle America for the cities with the power to make, or crush dreams.

It Really Isn’t That Bad

May 11th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Just My Photography, Just My Thoughts

Texas is so wonderfully hot.  But never mind that.  Check this out.  The first picture was taken two years ago.  Two.

Now one taken like a week ago.

Gas hasn’t really gone up THAT much considering.  Two years ago?  $3.497 vs $3.498!  It has only gone up $0.001 so… what’s the big hullabaloo?!

Maybe that’s why I haven’t gotten so worked up over the gas prices.  Behold the power of browsing your old Flickr posts.  Fun times.

MoveOn.DNC…

I absolutely hate spam.  Luckily Google catches most of it, almost all of it.  But what to do when the mail isn’t unsolicited?  Those annoying forwards from family members, for instance.  Or in my case, emails from the Democratic National Committee

Re: Devastating new Iraq ad

I get these emails from them at least once a week at most once a day and nearly every one of these messages start with “RE:” in the subject line.

“RE” technically means, “In regards to” but has come to mean, “In reply to”.  Slightly different wording meaning totally different things.  When you get an email which has “RE” in the subject line, you immediately demise that the email is a response to something you sent earlier.

Not when it’s from the DNC and they way they do this is deceitful and, well done pretty stupidly.

If you are going to fake something, at least do it right.  I finally got fed up with them and sent the email to the left.

Maybe I’m just bitchy but this kind of stuff really bothers me.

The True Evils of Outsourcing

I’m sure you’ve been screwed over by outsourcing… bad technical support is probably the number one.  Dell has recognized this and moved their customer service back to America.  I’m not sure, but at first you had to pay extra to have America based tech support trough Dell, wow.

But this outsourcing is far far worse.  Wow.  Check out the Moblogic.tv video below.  They do a hell of a job bringing the news to the Web2.0 masses, one article a day.

Sally Kern - Hate-monger

March 12th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Just My Life, Just My Rant, Just My Video

I’m sure by now you have all read about Sally Kern’s hate speech against homosexuals and followers of Islam.  Here is a recording of the speech, a transcript c/o the BBC follows.

I cannot believe that she is getting away with this. It’s just incredible. Listen and then go to the Human Rights Campaign site to see what you can do.

Full transcript of a speech by Sally Kern on the “gay agenda” with a backhanded slap at Islam

The homosexual agenda [Loud snap] is destroying this nation. OK? It’s just a fact. [Volume increases] Not everybody’s lifestyle is equal, just like not all religions are equal.

You know, the very fact that I’m talking to you like this here today, puts me in jeopardy. OK? Uh and I’m not anti, I’m not gay-bashing, but according to God’s word that is not the right kind of lifestyle, it has deadly consequences for those people involved in it, they have more suicides, uh and they’re more discouraged, there’s more illness, their uh lifespans are shorter, you know?

It’s, it’s, it’s not a lifestyle that is good for this nation.

‘Matter of fact, studies show, that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades.

So it’s the death knell of this country.

I honestly think it’s the biggest threat even, that our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam, which I think is a big threat. OK?

Because what’s happening now, they’re going after er uh in schools - two year-olds!

You know why they’re trying to get early childhood education? They want to get our young children into the government schools so they can indoctrinate them! I taught school for close to twenty years and we’re not teaching facts and knowledge anymore folks, we’re teaching indoctrination. OK?

And they’re going after our young children, as young as two years of age, to try to teach them that the homosexual lifestyle is the acceptable lifestyle.

You know, gays are infiltrating city councils.

Do you know? Eureka Springs [Arkansas], anybody been there, for the [Great] Passion Play? [A "Creation Truth" production] OK, have you heard that the city council of Eureka Springs is now controlled by gays? OK?

There are some others. Uh, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Tacoma, Md.; Kensington, Md.; in Vermont, Oregon, West Palm Beach, Fla. and a lot of other places in Florida.

What’s happening? And they are winning elections. One of the things I deal with in our legislature, I tried to introduce a bill last year, that would notify parents, uh schools had to let parents know what clubs their students were involved in.

And the reason I did that bill, primarily, was this, we had the Gay-Straight Alliance coming into our schools.

Kids are getting involved in these groups, their lives are being ruined, their parents don’t know about it. So I introduced a bill that said you have to notify all clubs, and things. And one of my colleagues said, “Well, you know we don’t have a gay problem in my community, so that’s why I voted against that bill.”

Well you know what? To me that is so dumb. If you’ve got cancer or something in your little toe, do you say, Well you know I’m just gonna forget about it, ’cause the rest of you’s fine?

It spreads! OK?

And this, this stuff is deadly, and it’s spreading and it will destroy uh our young people, it will destroy this nation.

Bill Clinton Visits MizzouRec

I met Beau and Chadd at the Hillary Clinton rally yesterday here at Mizzou. Hill’s wasn’t there but Bill went in her place. He gave a fantastic speech and just really sold Hillary. She’s got my vote come Super Tuesday!

It was is crazy to think that this guy lead us to America’s strongest years since I have been alive and that afterwards working for so many philanthropic groups.

I bumped into several friends at the even, Geoff, John, Chad… and I even saw Mark and his beau Sam.

After his wonderful speech, Bill greeted the crowd signing books and fliers and, well anything people could get autographed.

I actually got to shake his hand a few times and even got a hug! Yes, I got to hug Bill Clinton.

I can die happy now. ;-)

As we were leaving the event, KOMU took time to interview Chadd and Beau.

The full photostream is available here and a slide show with two hundred shots (I was fighting 1256 people and about 40 press…) can be viewed over here.

Abortion Leads to Illegal Immigrants?

July 26th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Just My Politics, Just My Thoughts

Former Republican Majority Leader Tom DeLay told a gathering of College Republicans that a link exists between legal abortion and illegal immigration in America. The remarks were included in a video produced by writer Max Blumenthal and posted at The Huffington Post.

“I contend [abortion] affects you in immigration,” DeLay told the Washington-area gathering. “If we had those 40 million children that were killed over the last 30 years, we wouldn’t need the illegal immigrants to fill the jobs that they are doing today. Think about it.”

Blumenthal was later apparently forcibly escorted out of the conference by College Republican staff. [Link]
