New Furniture Day

August 1st, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Just My Life

Today was incredibly busy.

We got my new couch and two new chairs, my dresser, my new mattress set, and my new vintage rug, my new…  It was quite the busy day.

Not only did we have to get all of this, we had to load it, unload it, carry it up three flights of stairs and set it up.  Tomorrow we will be hanging artwork and figuring out how I will setup my photography showcase wall.  Plus we will move out some old furniture and maybe even paint my foyer.

How exciting?!  This is just one of the many reasons I love having family in town haha.

After all of that work we watched, The Other Boleyn Girl which was a fantastic, if not a somewhat upsetting movie.

The British of that time were all sorts of messed up.  I suppose though, we were all kind of crazy back then.  We had to be, why else would we fuck our family?

Natalie Portman is such an incredible actress, I just love her.

Plus, tomorrow is my birthday.  So, do what you must ;-)

Night friends, enjoying my first night on the new bed, if only Ryan were here to join me… :-(

My Massive iTunes Library

You might remember, since it was my last post, that when I updated my iTunes to 7.7.1, it crashed my iTunes Library.  I had to start from scratch.  One reader posted a question in my comments.  ZC asked, did I really have the music, why would I have that much media, is it all legal/illegal; etc etc.

ZC.

I most certainly do have that much music, or I did before the crash.  Some numbers have dropped but I retained about 95% of my media.

Why so much?  Well, I don’t pay for cable/satellite and I live in an area where picking up HD over the air is not very feasible.  I got tired of paying for HD-DVR Cable a few years ago and when the AppleTV came out, I was done with it.

Since I was in high school I had the habit of buying lots of CD’s from Warehouse Music.  The store near my house was going out of business, for four years, and I took advantage of its slow, slow death.

I had a great job working in a chemical company’s laboratory and doing IT work, since I only had classes half of the day, I spent the last year of high school working and really racking up a large library of music.

When iTunes was released for the PC, I went berzerk.  The first thing I purchased, sadly, was Mama Mia; I was hitting on someone who wanted a copy of the CD.

Anyways, the seed was born and I put about $100/month into my iTunes account though it wasn’t uncommon for me to buy 10 CD’s from a new/used music store in a day.

I did this not only to fulfill my love of music, I did it also because I lived with four to six other people who also loved music; I had money, they did not.  I would buy music and let them stream it onto their iTunes in our home.  We had large parties at least once a week, it was college after all, and those parties required vast quantities of high quality, popular music.

Later, I would tire of paying for cable and DVR.  The whole idea of paying to watch something once was stupid to me.  Almost worse was paying to record something only to have to delete it sometime later.

Remember that episode of The OC when what’s-her-face gets drunk and makes out with who’s-that-ho?

I decided I wanted to start buying my television shows and watching them on my schedule.  Going to school, working full time, watching tv, doesn’t work.

I got the AppleTV the day it came out.  I got an iPod video, the day it came out.  I watched my television at the gym, I listened to my music and podcasts in the car.

When the AppleTV finally arrived, I was able to put these movies onto our 46″ plasma screen and off of my tiny iPod screen or my 24″ iMac screen.  That was amazing to me.

I bought more and more television this week.  I considered my cable tv bill of $70/month to be my allowance for buying television shows on iTunes/AppleTV.

Eventually I filled up the 500gb hard drive of my iMac and bought two 1TB externals, one for Time Machine and one for iTunes.

Now I have a 55″ HDTV in my apartment and a 42″ HDTV at our condo.  The 55″ HDTV is powered by my AppleTV, the 42″ is done so by my MacBook Pro through DVI/HDMI.

I am never stranded without some form of entertainment from my iPod, my iPhones (Edge and 3G versions), my iMac, my MacBook Pro or my AppleTV.  It allows me to workout longer and harder.  It keeps plane rides and bus trips barable and to me is a worthy investment.

Friends come over all the time to watch old seasons of Weeds or Damages, just like you would if you had the series on DVD.  Only now we can just click through the AppleTV and don’t have to deal with CD’s and DVD’s all over the place.

Some might think I’m crazy and some people have hundreds and thousands of more titles than I do.  It is not a bragging thing, it is just me loving media and entertainment and consuming it on my time, on my rules when I want to do it.

I hope that explains it.

From the DMV to Nirvana

June 30th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Just My Fabulousness, Just My Life

Our last day in San Francisco found us back at the Department of Motor Vehicles.  But before we ran our last errand in The City, I picked up breakfast for us from Sugar Café.  We shared a Cinnamon Pecan Brioche and a Dark & White Chocolate Brioche.  They were very tasty.  Too tasty.  Ryan and I decided that they spelled certain death should we make that a regular breakfast.

Cafe Sugar is a neat little café.  It feels like it belongs in Los Angeles with its modern furnishings and a tiny bit pretentious employees.  The menu is full what read to be pretty delicious items though with a name like Sugar Café, you would think there would be more sweets on the menu.  I guess really though, that’s okay, we eat enough crap as it is.

I hope to enjoy an entire meal there the next time we get out to San Francisco.

This time Ryan was getting his ambulance license.  The wait was quite a bit longer this time around.

We had the same, hilarious DMV agent.  We threatened to be back and what do you know, we were and we had him.  He was really fun, made being at the DMV not so painful.

All the studying paid off as Ryan passed his ambulance test with flying colors.  We took the 24 down Divisadero to the Castro where Kevin was waiting.  The plan was shopping and then lunch at Nirvana.

I picked up a little gift for Micheal and Ryan got a couple of things for some co-workers.

Lunch at Nirvana was awesome.  Mike and Kevin used to bring me there all the time, well, at least three times haha.  I had the Tofu Panini on Focaccia while Ryan had the Mano Mango Noodles.  They have quite a few vegetarian dishes, highly recommend it.

Kevin drove us to our Hotel 480 where we were staying to pick up our bags and then off to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to catch our flight out of San Francisco.

We used the excuse that we were on vacation one last time as Ryan got a Kona Mocha Chip ice cream and while I sipped on my Dark Chocolate Frappe from Pete’s Coffee.  I sure do miss Pete’s, they make the best cappuccino.

So here we are, waiting for the boarding for our plane to begin.  I’m hoping to get some work done on the flight so I’m not so rushed when I get home to finish this project.

On a Mission (in the Mission)

Our last day in San Francisco was a busy day.  Ryan had a lot of paperwork to get processed and needed a few LiveScans for a job application and ambulance license so we marched down Powell to the Bart station.

Wow, I guess I forgot all about the Pride Parade.  Thousands of people met us at the Bart station, completely hiding it from our field of vision.  We hung out, watched a few floats go by, reveled in the fun, friendly good times and took a few pictures.

IMG_0388

As with any gay event, not everyone there was there to celebrate equality.  Some religious zealots where protesting the parade, the weekend, the gay marriages in California and just whatever popped into their heads.

IMG_0348

They blamed the fires on the gays.  They blamed the terrorist attacks in 2001 on the gays.  They blamed the salmonella on the gays.  They blamed the storms on the gays.  Apparently it’s our fault.  Sorry guys.  Our bad.

The kicker was when he said, “If you guys are such a loving, kind and friendly people, why do you need all of these police officers?  It’s because you cause hate and destruction that they are here” and then went onto something about paying good Californian’s tax dollars for us to celebrate our heresy…

I guess what he was missing was this.  The police are there not to protect us from ourselves but from people like him.  Pride is about as safest I have ever felt in a city, day or night.  The only thing one gay guy wants to do to another gay guy is fuck him (excuse my vulgarity and obvious exaggeration).

Well anyway, we finally made it to the UPS Store for Ryan’s LiveScan only to find it had closed for Pride.  Haha, a UPS closed for Pride, how awesome.  We took a seat at Squat & Gobble for lunch while we figured out a Plan B.

IMG_0394

Squat & Gobble is the perfect little brunch place.  I always think of Landon when I go there.  I’m pretty sure you would love it Landon, reminds me of The Café in Washington DC only… better.  It was delicious.  While there we found another LiveScan place, hopped on a bus and back to the Mission we go.

LiveScan went easy enough, then back to the hotel.  I’m leaving Ryan here to go to Pride for a bit.  Catch you guys later!

Bags! Bags! BAGS!!!

I’ve been getting toys like crazy lately huh?  It’s all for a reason, or at least it is in my head.  Here are my latest two gems.  Arrived today from Amazon.com is the Crumpler 7 Million Dollar Home.  This holds ALL of my photo equipment, less the tripods and ARRI lighting kits haha.

7 Million Dollar Home

That’s not my stuff (which is too bad cause DAMN!) but that is my bag.  I’ll be reviewing this guy after a while once I get to use it a bit.  So far I could not be happier.  Took a bit to get it properly configured but wow, what a wonderful fit the two of us are!

The second bag purchase was a Built.NY Laptop Porter bag.  This thing is the shizbizzle.  They really thought of everything.

Built NY Laptop Porter

Let me just copy and paste what they said about it…

The new Laptop Porter boasts two exterior pockets for easy accessibility to documents, files and accessories. Constructed from neoprene, the Porter provides remarkable protection for your laptop. The main compartment features a heavy-duty zipper closure and the zigzag stitched seams improve water resistance and durability. Our proprietary removable shoulder strap makes carrying our bag more comfortable.

  • DESIGNED TO HOLD LAPTOPS UP TO 15.4″
  • DUAL EXTERIOR POCKETS FOR EXTRA FILE AND ACCESSORY STORAGE
  • THE BAG ABSORBS THE SHOCK, NOT YOUR SHOULDERS
  • SOFTGRIP HANDLES
So it holds the laptop, a binder or papers in the accessory storage doo dad, my power cable and headphones and flash drive and media reader and everything has it’s own place.  The bag is so comfortable since the entire thing is neoprene.  So where more bags would pull on your shoulder with each step, this one stretches to absorb the shock.  Genius!
Ok, I’m off to hang out with Micheal and Dustin.  Some Will and Grace and maybe some video games and some beer.  Yay to great friends.  Too bad they are all leaving me soon!  Sad face!

I’m Sick and Tired of…

March 12th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Just My Life, Just My Nerdiness

Being sick and tired.

I went to urgent care today.  For about two weeks I’ve have been dealing with what I thought was a cold.  I got my flu shot this year so I wouldn’t have to worry about getting sick… Lull and behold, I have bronchitis.

Are you kidding me?  Ugh.  Luckily I caught it before it got too bad

So anyways, while I was waiting to get my four RX’s filled, I got a new aquarium for my goldfish with a nice filter and all that jazz.  The first aquarium I bought today had a leak so I had to return it.  I give major props to Columbia Pet Center.  They are incredibly knowledgeable about all things pet related and seem to care a great deal for their creatures, large and small.

The guy who helped me out there did a wonderful job of making me feel comfortable with my purchase of an aquarium (at $15 less than the other pet store) and power-wheel bio filter.  My goldfish is just loving his new space, ten times larger.

In a month they will test my water and let me know if I’m ready for any plants or other fish.  How professional.  PetCo or Pet’s Mart would sell me anything just to make a sell, never-mind the health of the fish.  Kevin brought me to this place a few years ago, thanks Kevin!

I also went to Best Buy to get yet another 1tb external hard drive.  I now have over 1.5tb of data on my iMac.  My external 1tb filled up with my iTunes library and Time Machine backups.  At first I had some trouble with my new drive but it seems to be working out just fine right now.  I have backed up my laptop and am currently moving the old Time Machine backups to the new drive.

It’s going to take a while…  Over 7 million files and counting?  I truly am a media whore.

UPDATE: I am now at over 10,000,000 files.  Holy crap.

UPDATE: It is still counting up after over seven hours and more than 29,000,000 files.  Something just isn’t right here.  There just can’t be that many Time Machine backups.

Kitchen Aid is sucking…

March 10th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Just My Life, Just My Rant

I bought a Kitchen Aid hand mixer to make mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving and it broke after like 15 minutes.  I bought a Kitchen Aid can opener, and tested five more at Target, and they were all defective, less one, which I exchanged for a broken one.

Now they can’t even properly label their products.

Thirteen dollars for that?  Is it a whisk or is it a serrated sandwich spreader?  Who can tell… who can tell.

Trip to the Mall

February 5th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Just My Life, Just My Photography

I made a little journey to the mall today to talk to Express about this Pea Coat I got which is falling apart, get a nice iron aaaaand mail something to Klipsch.

Two things I noticed. FYE (For Your Entertainment) finally went out of business. It’s amazing they lasted as long as they did. I mean come on! They were selling CD’s for $22.99 that Best Buy was selling for $11.99 and iTunes sold for $9.99. HD-DVD movies were $50+… Come on!

At least they welcomed a somewhat locally owned record store to take over their sales.

Meanwhile, I picked up a really nice iron… I was nervous blowing over $30 for an iron but the Rowenta Professional iron that I got proved to be worth it. It really is an incredible little guy. I know, this all coming from the guy who gets wet over small home appliances.

Sadly, they don’t do so great when they are supposed to translate English to Spanish as seen on this Rowenta handheld steamer.

Instant Pleasure

May 14th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Just My Life

Here you go Geoff.

Geoff and I went shopping at the lake today and boy, did we go crazy or what?!  $641 each, oh wait, I missed a decimal, $6.41 dollars later… We each bought the same cake riser and bowtie plate.  Haha.  But we had a fabulous time.

It was awesome to talk about just everything on our minds, which, to those of you snickering, is actually quite a bit.  Fun fun fun, so much that I crashed for like three hours afterwards.  I’m still working on being fully awake again.

Here’s to tomorrow!
