I have family (my mom) in town right now which means eating food I typically wouldn’t. Since starting the Four Hour Body lifestyle, I have been eating really well and drinking very little. However, this all came to a pause when my mom came in town. It’s quite hard to stick to a diet when someone with great taste is in town, ready to try it all.

So here’s what I have been enjoying on my cheat week, well a few of the things.

4-Hour Diet Slow Carb Breakfast Bowl

My blog post yesterday about the benefits I’ve seen on the 4-Hour Body, Slow Carb Diet was one of the most talked about blog posts I’ve done in a while. I know from it I’ve sold a few copies of Tim Ferriss‘s book, The 4-Hour Body, and peeked the interest of many of my friends.

Something people have been asking from me was the recipe for my breakfast. Being the data-obsessed guy that I am, I didn’t want to put out a recipe without all the nutritional information. Especially since this recipe is directly connected to a diet plan.

I put the necessary information into NutritionData.com and got my results. YIKES! Even though I’ve shown some great results, the nutrition of this scramble isn’t nearly as good as I had hoped. I then compared it with the recipe Tim uses on his blog as a comparison.

His is faster and healthier than the “luxury” version of my recipe. The “healthy” alternative version I provide is actually a better tasting and arguably more nutrient-dense recipe than Tim’s, problem is it takes a lot more work (ten minutes vs three minutes).

4-Hour Diet Slow Carb Breakfast Scrambles

Perhaps look at my recipe for the person not totally committed to the Slow Carb Diet. Also worth noting, I typically use 100% egg whites but to make the scramble richer, I did 2 part egg white, 1 part full egg which is why there is so much more cholesterol and a little more fat.

Skip that full egg and you’ve got a much healthier meal, even healthier than Tim’s! The version with all egg whites (no whole egg) is in the middle and as you can see, outside of a little more carbohydrates and less protein.  Continue reading

A Cake, a Movie, a Melon Baller

I’ve made some wonderful friends through Twitter and just a few weekends ago, I got to share one of these friendships with many of my old friends.

Ryan and Ben, (@rzhale and @joubiku, respectively on Twitter) came into town for a weekend away from the bustling city life that is Kansas City, ahem.  The weekend had been heavily anticipated for all involved for a few weeks and as the days closed in the anticipation grew to astronomical proportions.
I welcomed them to their new home for the weekend, my apartment and shortly after their arrival we headed down to Shakespeare’s Pizza (@ShakesPizza) for some dinner, drinks and a fun environment.

After pizza we stopped by Top Ten Wines for a few minutes before ultimately heading back to my apartment for wine, cookies and hours of hilarious YouTube videos. I don’t’ think Phoebe (@fotofobe), Josh (@brooding_soul), Ryan, Ben or I had ever laughed as hard in our lives. One of the most entertaining evenings in I’ve ever had.

Phoebe and I decided we should share our new addiction to Cafe Berlin (@CafeBerlin) to Josh, Ryan and Ben. Amazing breakfast, delicious food, fun, waitstaff and a comically difficult cream dispenser.

That evening was Cake and a Movie Night (#CaaM).  I made a Chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting and a bittersweet chocolate-peanut butter ganache.

Before Cake and a Movie, we headed out for wine drinking at Top Ten Wines downtown (@TopTenWines), my absolute favorite wine bar, where Chase (@clettenberg) performing.  Yet again, Chase put on a great show and as per usual, Lauren (@laurenkilberg) proved to be a fantastic wine maiden.

Cake and a Movie had a great turn out, some regulars and some new attendees.

My Ryan (@kaleb1983) finally got to join us for the weekend festivities.  We watched Toy Story, the Pixar film that put them on the map.  Wow, who would have known how funny that movie would be, over ten years later.  I sure wasn’t expecting all the laughs.

The next morning, Ryan, Ben, Ryan and I went to Bleu for a brunch before Ben and Ryan had to head out of town.

Have I Got a Cookie for You!

Made up a new chocolate chip cookie recipe the other day.  Finals are here so I’ve been doing all I can to escape my geology book…  So I thought about @Madmax69 and his love of chocolate chip cookies and made up this in leu of studying.

I’ll post the recipe if there’s interest.  I’ve gotta say, they are pretty darn delish, subtle hints of flavor.  But then again, it is yet another chocolate chip cookie recipe. YACCCR.

Cake and a Movie

So, I’ve mentioned it a few times here and have even posted pictures of the cakes here but, now officially, a post just about Cake and a Movie.

I started Cake and a Movie Night during Winter Break… I was bored and had all these ingredients so there we go, baked a cake.  Then made the call, invited a bunch of friends over and we watched a movie.

Now it has grown through Twitter and the hashtag, #CaaM.  Each week I have about 20 or so people over, we drink wine, watch a movie and eat cake.

So, I built a site to keep up with it!

You can even vote on which movie we watch!

Cake and a Movie Night

Each week I have friends over for a cake and a movie.  Most of those who come over are from my wonderful group of Twitter friends.

We watch movies, all sorts really but normally not the ones you’ve already seen. Independent films, foreign films, sha know, good movies.

We’ve had a few different cakes, traditional, fudge, frozen, mousse… I think the next one will be Crème brûlée. Yeah yeah. It’s not a cake, I get that. Whatever, it’s delicious.

This is what we had last night for Cake and a Movie night, or #CaaM on the Twitters.

I made the same thing for the previous movie, Happy Together by Wong Kar-wai, but this time I didn’t rush anything and it came out even better.

Last night we watched Ghostown. It was an awesome movie and the first feature film for #CaaM.  Of course, it wasn’t a usual #CaaM night, instead of Twitter peeps, it was my grandmother, our client and Ryan.

Culinary, Genius

Friday night I am going to a D to the E to the M-O-C-R-A-T party hosted by Mark. It’s basically a chance to celebrate the dems for taking the house and senate. It will definitely be a fun fun fun event.

Being Justin… I felt the need to add something to this party. I am a party thrower lover and if I can get my hands into any party organization situation (rhymed, just reminding you) I love to hop on, even if my expertise wasn’t requested haha.

Remember the amazing Brothel parties I used to throw? I’m made to party and to organize said parties.

So what could I do for this party? How about cakes?

I went out today and bought a $400 Kitchenaid at an INCREDIBLE discount. Everybody, run to Kohl’s and save $200! Plus $40 back in Kohl’s Cash and $60 for Kitchenaid.com purchases on accessories for your new stand mixer. It’s a first class deal.

So far I have made three cheese cakes, tomorrow I will be baking the other two cakes and putting it all together that night and the next day right before the party. This is going to be one HUGE feat.

The cake on the far left will be on its own. It isn’t close to being finished but won’t be too much different.

The other two cheesecakes… now that’s another story. They are going to be a part of a four layer cake, they are just two of the layers. I won’t get into too much detail, let’s just say it is going to be amazing.

I will post pics tomorrow after Geoff and I finish these bad boys off. Not even he knows exactly what I have in mind… muhahahaha!
