Rick Perry disgusts me

I try not to make it a habit of writing purely political posts but the new Rick Perry YouTube video threw me over the edge. If you like the video, you probably won’t like this post.

There is no shortage of reasons I don’t think Perry should be a presidential candidate for the Republican party. I don’t even think he should be the Governor of Texas. It’s not just because he’s a goof who embarrases most people from Texas, like myself, it’s the way he markets himself as a candidate.

For whatever reason, the loud, far right conservative politicians on the scene these days treat culture and intelligence as negative attributes. They forget that Christian law, much like Sharia law, is not United States law. They forget that smart people create solutions where others can’t. They forget a lot of things, many of which were their founding principles. I’m not talking about all Republicans, I’m talking about people like Rick Perry.

Two Months with a Four Hour Body

It’s been just around two months since I started the Four Hour Body lifestyle, more precisely the slow carb diet portion of Tim Ferriss’s Four Hour Body book. First thing every morning that I am here in San Francisco, I weigh in to see my progress. Some days my weight is up, most times it is down.

I do this in the morning, religiously and on the same scale, so that I can get a consistent measure of my progress. During my trips, which happen far more often than not, I have tried weighing myself on other’s scales with mixed results. Seems my friends and family’s scales are either really nice (I’ve been up to ten pounds lighter on theirs!) or mine is really mean.

Nevertheless, I present to you, my chart of weight loss.

Four Hour Body Weight Graph after Two MonthsAs you can see, there has been a pretty dramatic loss in weight. Twenty-two pounds to be exact. The first week on the diet I had a sharp drop in weight. Most diets work this way as your body is shocked into a new regimen. The first two spikes upwards are from the “cheat days” where you get to eat whatever you like. The much slower drop in weight later on the graph represents my two weeks traveling.

Jackson Pollock or Toxic Mold

This is a blog post I probably should have written a few weeks ago. As you probably know, Ryan and I have been staying at various hotels across San Francisco for the last few weeks. And while I’d love to say I got a gig writing a San Francisco high-end hotel blog but that isn’t the case.

In fact, the reality is much much less glamorous.

Ryan moved into our San Francisco apartment last August. It’s a fabulous apartment, in the heart of the city, on the edge of the Castro and just a block or so from a metro station. I walk less than a block to my Walgreens and gym, just a few blocks from our grocery store. The location is a dream.

Though it isn’t nearly as large as the condo we have in Columbia, it makes for it in fabulous views, nice accommodations and location, location, location.

A handful of weeks ago Ryan pulled back a pillow from our bed which sits against the bedroom’s back wall. Behind the pillow was quite the site.

I’ll leave it to you to decide which it was that was growing/painted on our wall and pillows, but here’s a hint, it’s definitely toxic mold. Continue reading

Going Away Party and a Road Trip to California

I’m packing up my place today, hoping to put the final touches on tomorrow before my going away party to be held tomorrow (Wednesday, December 15th) night @TopTenWines here in Columbia.

Top Ten Wines has been my “go to” bar here for years. The owner, Paul, and the regular wine lovers have turned this once small wine shop into a bustling bar, music venue and the best wine tasting room in mid Missouri. Saying goodbye to Top Ten Wines is like saying goodbye to one of my friends, many of which I have because of Top Ten Wines. It only seemed fitting that I had my going away party there!

Oh yeah, everyone is invited! So if you are in Columbia and free tomorrow night, stop by Top Ten anytime after 7:00pm. There will be a champagne toast, ping pong, great music and more!

In an attempt to avoid the slick winter roads of Colorado, I’ve decided to take a somewhat southern route to San Francisco. All going as planned, I will depart Columbia Thursday around noon and drive to Amarillo Texas. Sleep there and then drive west to Kingman Arizona. Next stop, San Francisco!

The plan is to leave December 17th 21st and arrive December 21st 24th in San Francisco. But I’ve given myself an extra day to make it so, perhaps it will be the 22nd 25th that I get to the city.

It’s going to be a LONG drive in my rented minivan but I’m hoping to make it fun with awesome music, informative podcasts and interesting audiobooks. If you have any suggestions for traveling music, standup comedy routines, audio books, etc, leave them in the comments!

Also, if I’m driving through your neck of the woods, let me know! I’m sure I’ll need a coffee break (or 90). Leave your suggestions, invitations and whatever else in the comments! Thanks friends!

I’m Moving Back to California

While it might be the worst kept secret, ever, I wanted to give myself time to tell each of my friends (as best I could) the news face to face before posting it here on the web. But, yes, I am moving to back to California, and quite soon. In fact, as of this writing, I have roughly 21 days left of life in Missouri before I head west to the Golden State.
