Going Away Party and a Road Trip to California

I’m packing up my place today, hoping to put the final touches on tomorrow before my going away party to be held tomorrow (Wednesday, December 15th) night @TopTenWines here in Columbia.

Top Ten Wines has been my “go to” bar here for years. The owner, Paul, and the regular wine lovers have turned this once small wine shop into a bustling bar, music venue and the best wine tasting room in mid Missouri. Saying goodbye to Top Ten Wines is like saying goodbye to one of my friends, many of which I have because of Top Ten Wines. It only seemed fitting that I had my going away party there!

Oh yeah, everyone is invited! So if you are in Columbia and free tomorrow night, stop by Top Ten anytime after 7:00pm. There will be a champagne toast, ping pong, great music and more!

In an attempt to avoid the slick winter roads of Colorado, I’ve decided to take a somewhat southern route to San Francisco. All going as planned, I will depart Columbia Thursday around noon and drive to Amarillo Texas. Sleep there and then drive west to Kingman Arizona. Next stop, San Francisco!

The plan is to leave December 17thย 21st and arrive December 21stย 24th in San Francisco. But I’ve given myself an extra day to make it so, perhaps it will be the 22ndย 25th that I get to the city.

It’s going to be a LONG drive in my rented minivan but I’m hoping to make it fun with awesome music, informative podcasts and interesting audiobooks. If you have any suggestions for traveling music, standup comedy routines, audio books, etc, leave them in the comments!

Also, if I’m driving through your neck of the woods, let me know! I’m sure I’ll need a coffee break (or 90). Leave your suggestions, invitations and whatever else in the comments! Thanks friends!

  1. Would love your suggestions for music for the road trip, great audiobooks, podcasts and standup routines! Just leave them in the comments and we’ll see what we all get together!

Also, if I’m driving through your area and you are interested in meeting up for a coffee or, if it is near one of my destination cities, a drink, post your interest right here!

  3. Doubt it would work for you since it’s a half hour out of the way, but if you need a quick early-afternoon coffee break in Lawrence, it would be cool to meet you in person before you head West.

  5. @msilverman That might actually work out! For whatever reason Google Maps defaulted to ignoring toll roads. When I turned that option off, I was sent right through the city and it saves me some time!

    Let’s make a plan for some coffee/tea!

  7. @justex07 Cool! seems that the KS turnpike would be faster anyway. There’s a couple good local coffee and tea places downtown close to the highway exit. I’ll send you a DM

  9. did your rental car come with free Sirius radio? Mine did last time and it was GREAT. I’m actually going to reactivate my sirius in my car for just December for my drive from Columbia to DC.

  11. @tdankmyer Oh I will have to ask today when I go to Avis to make sure everything is in order. I used to have XM Satellite Radio and loved it for the first year but then Pandora came out so I sort of forgot about XM.

On my drive through Florida I got the chance to enjoy news and comedy programs via Sirius XM. I had forgotten how nice it was, despite way way way too many commercials.

Up to the minute news and unique programming would be a nice add-on for my long trip! Thanks for the suggestion!

  13. @justex07 yea i dunno about XM, but Sirius didn’t have too many commercials (I guess they are sort of the same now), but I really liked having 1. 2 NPR stations ALL THE TIME no matter what city I was in. 2. Alt Nation was a great alternative/indie rock station 3. the comedy stations were ok 4. other random programming (being able to catch just about any sports broadcast that was going on around the country or the multiple political news stations). Together, they made for a nice break away from the iPod. If you are a big NPR fan though, i know the NPR iPhone app has a station locator that I would use while driving across the country. It located where you were and told you where the closest NPR affiliate station was.

  15. @tdankmyer I enjoyed the CNN, MSNBC, Headline News and music channels on my drive. Wish I had a car with Ford Sync so I could just say “Listen to NPR” or however it is. Navigating all those channels can get tedious/dangerous.

  17. Cya Tomorrow night! Now that I think about it this will be the first time I have ever met in person someone who I befriended and knew only via twitter. It will also be my first time at top 10 wines. It does look like a LONG drive, but going the south route will be totally worth it the moment you get to roll your windows down.

  19. @TheDigitalNinja AWESOME! I’ve met almost all of my friends over the last few years through Twitter, even those who live in Columbia. In fact, one of my best friends, lauracox , I met because of Twitter!

Also, toptenwines is pretty bomb if I may say so. Lots of great wine and unique beers.

Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow night! There will hopefully be a lot of Twitter people there ๐Ÿ˜€

  21. nickstarr Not super sure the Sirius iPhone app will work for me since I will be spending most of my time in areas with little cell service but I’ll give it a try.

To get the seven free days of use, do I have to signup for a contract and cancel it? Not sure the process for the whole deal. Oh, and which app? There area few in the iTunes store.

  23. @justex07 All true! Although I tend to use my phone/radio/ipod too much when driving. But my driving can also get pretty monotonous (Indiana, Ohio, Illinois). Also, for podcasts (i’m staying on my public radio love) I’m a big fan of This American Life. I just downloaded the last 8 episodes from iTunes for 99 cents each. And I know TAL is hurting right now because when you go to their website there’s a pop up note from Ira Glass asking for donations! So, if you’re a fan, and want to help them out, but a few podcats!

  25. Judging by Facebook, you were just in my neighborhood (Sub Zero). : ( Oh well. The last memory I have of hanging out with you is taking pictures at the jewel box in Forest Park. At least the last one is a good one. Have a safe trip.

  27. @mccoyca Yep, got back from a long trip to Florida and my iPad screen decided to screw up so I extended my trip until the next morning. Apple replaced it, no questions asked!

Really wanted to go back to the Jewel Box before I moved but it doesn’t look like I’ll have that opportunity ๐Ÿ™

On the plus side, San Francisco!

  29. @tdankmyer That’s a good one! I haven’t listened to This American Life in AGES! So I guess they canceled their podcast in favor of a pay-per-listen model. That’s too bad that people didn’t donate enough, I was a pretty regular donator back in the day.

    Thanks for another great suggestions!

  31. Love my Sirius radio, but in lieu of that, I would say get some good ’40s music, big band, swing type stuff. That’s what keeps me going while driving.
