Leo Laporte Won an Emmy for This?!

Ok, so you might know that @LeoLaporte is a hero of mine. I know @ZackLuye knows that, he just LOVES to point out his affiliations to my technology heroes haha.  I even went as far as moving to the area of California where Leo lives and even worked at the Starbucks he always goes to for his coffee in Petaluma!

Stalker much? Meh, maybe.  Never did meet him though.

This morning Leo mentioned something that popped up on the web about him in the latest This Week in Google, one of Leo’s podcasts.  There was something on the internet that said, “Leo Laporte makes $1″

I looked it up. Turns out Leo Laporte makes $1.5 million a year doing his TWiT network, not $1 haha.  While reading more about him, I stumbled onto this video where he talks his rise from radio to broadcast TV and then to where he is today, self-distributed internet podcasting.

It’s a great video if you have the time to watch all forty minutes.  But the point of this blog post is his Dev Null character on his MSNBC show, The Site.  Leo makes fun of this character, so I don’t feel so bad doing the same.  Because the producers, of his own show, didn’t think he’d be good for video across Soledad O’Brien, they made him a horrible looking 3D character.

And what’s more? I found another video of Devnull where he gets a $29.95 upgrade, the character doesn’t hide the fact that he is computer based.  The cheap upgrade doesn’t work so well, and Devnull get’s even more messed up looking.  Why does this interest me?  Mostly cause I’m a nerd.  When Snow Leopard came out, Leo went on and on about how it wasn’t a REAL upgrade to Leopard for the Mac.  Making the point that it wasn’t a totally new operating system, but more of an expansive service pack.  What Leo stressed the most though? How for $29.95, this was a fantastic value adding upgrade.  So if you’re a total nerd, it might be funny/interesting.  Probably just to me though…

So there you go.  Oh and Leo.  If Pure Media & Marketing doesn’t hire me, hows about you make a move? hehe

Time to run downtown to pay my rent and then get to class. Catch you later!

  1. Oh, vintage MSNBC. "The Site" was quite the novel concept at the time, with Laporte's character animated in real-time. It's pretty amazing how far video, particularly live on-air tech has come in 10-15 years. (Now I'm longing for my TV production days back in high school…)

P.S.: Love Soledad O'Brien. She was the best part of CNN before it became what it is now. ("American Morning" was my morning news show while it was still on the air.)

  2. Funny stuff – I keep forgetting how awful that was then someone like you embeds a video and it all comes rushing back. Sorry I didn't see you at the Starbucks! I mostly drink Peet's or the local brew, but had I known!

  3. Soledad O’Brien is such a phony. In April 2008, Reverend Jeremiah Wright gave a speech in Detroit to the NAACP.  One of the things that  he said in this speech was that black and white children learn with different parts of their brain, and then gave an "unflattering imitation of the way white pastors speak."  Peoples comments were that he gave a racial speech. Soledad  O'Brien, on CNN, was quoted as saying, in a gushing manner, that the speech was a "home run" and "really funny." When questioned about the things he said in the speech, she would say things like, what he really meant was …..or what he wanted to say was… Once again she's covering the truth and being racist.  Just as with the Henry Gates incident.  In an appearance on Anderson Cooper, the night or so before CNN's "The Moment of Truth" she appeared enraged that it was a racial profile against Gates. She said that she got calls from her FRIENDS saying it was all about Gates being black.  She went on that show with the purpose, at all costs, to destroy the credibility of the white police officer and throw him under the bus.  When Cooper was talking she wanted to make the point that Gates said "Thank You" to the police officers.  By mentioning that, she was purposely misrepresenting the truth by playing down Gates' belligerence and racial remarks, which she didn't even mention.  Even Gates' attorney and friend, said to the media that he used very strong language. Colon Powell and President Obama both said he should take blame in the incident.  I have seen this in many occasions with her, where she doesn't speak the truth and hides the true facts.  Another time on Anderson Cooper, Cooper said to O'Brien that Senator John McCain hasn't brought race into the campaign, like he said he wouldn't.  You would think her response would have been something like, that's great because he shouldn't.  Instead she strongly insinuated that he would, even in the last week of the campaign. Also, her questioning style, in interviews  is completely different with a white person than it is with a black person.  Like in her interview with Henry Gates in "The Moment of Truth"  She just went along with his lies. I have seen several comments on various websites about her racism.  There are many other examples I could give of her racial bias, dishonesty and hypocrisy. She seems to consider herself to be black. She mentioned in an interview that her parents made it clear to her “you’re black” and that’s all there is to it.
She’s all about being #1, she wants the world to revolve around her. She comes first, before her family. She wants to be a celebrity figure and a star. In interviews she says she works 6 days a week, mostly out of town, and on some holidays. She goes to gala events, concerts, lots of entertainment events, as a single woman, leaving her husband and kids behind.
I think Soledad O’Brien is a very poor journalist. What ever happened to the days of CNN with Bernard Shaw and Judy Woodruff? They were honorable journalists. You could believe what they said.

  4. Wow, when I saw this comment from you I was FLOORED! As I said about, I've always been a HUGE fan of yours. Hope you're having a great time in the UAE. My parents just moved to Saudi Arabia and are actually enjoying the new world.

Keep up the amazing TWiT Network work. Look forward to someday doing something just like it.
