TwitterCounter.com Featured User

Sometimes, not even being a featured user on TwitterCounter.com can help you.  TwitterCounter claims an expected 150-5,000 follower increase over a period of a few weeks or months. Apparently for @GetOutofDebtGuy, that isn’t the case.

Moral of the story? Instead of throwing out $65-15,000 to gain followers, put out some quality content that gets you new followers, naturally.

Disqus the Disappointment

UPDATE: And just like that, Gianni at Disqus has my comments imported and everything works.  Fantastic.  A testament to Disqus and their support staff.  Resolved the problem less than an hour after I blogged about it! – Turns out not so lucky, click here to learn why.

Yesterday I shared my ultimately negative experience with the blog comment system, IntenseDebate.  The system was at first promising, before it fell flat on it’s face with a beautiful front end but clunky backend, inability to properly manage logins and artificially limiting features.  You can read more about why, just click back to that post.

So I switched back to Disqus, the commenting system I tried out a couple of years ago before ultimately abandoning it.  The early versions of Disqus wouldn’t synchronize comments with the WordPress database.  If Disqus ever went away, so did your comments.

I installed the latest Disqus as a plugin for the latest version of WordPress.  I rand the installation, followed the directions to import my comments and this is what happened and continues to happen.

No comments are imported! I went to Twitter and talked to @Disqus a few weeks ago.  I even emailed them about the problem and they said they’d take care of it.

And yet, still, there are no comments from my previous posts.  They all still exist in my blog, you can see there are over 1,600 of them.

If I go to Disqus to see my comments, only five show up!

There is certainly no way I can really review Disqus until I get it to actually work.  I really want to like the system and the people behind it.  They have been so quick to send help my way, even on this blog, but sadly the help never fixes the problem.

For right now though, Disqus is just a disappointment.  Even more so than IntenseDebate.  At least that would import my comments…

So why not discuss this Disqus problem but logging your comments on the form below.  See, any new post and any new comments show up just fine. It’s those pesky historical comments and conversations that never showed up to the party.

iMac, Dead, Dying or… ZOMBIE!!!

Cheers

Cheers

If you were paying careful attention to my Twitter stream, you might have noticed a few to dozens of tweets about my iMac.  It’s had a rough year.  First it got bugs stuck in the screen…

And of course, there was the screen going bonkers, which was in no way connected to the bugs (it preceded the bugs)

This is the problem that no one seems to be able to solve.  Open any image in any photo editing program and make a marquee or crop selection.  A few seconds latter the screen goes crazy, this is a mild example.  Had I waited and taken a picture a few minutes later, the entire screen would have grown to look like the top of that image (which should be a picture or like a cup of coffee or something.)

The fact that taking a screen shot (using Skitch) picked up the problem is really interesting to me, seems like if it was outward delivering hardware issue (video card), it would show up wrong on the screen but correct on the screen shot.  An example would be when the video card of my MacBook Pro overheated

I ran my tests and everything was kosher.

So I brought the computer to MacXperts.  They have so far, over the past 5, yes FIVE, months, replaced the screen, the video card, the ram, the motherboard and the hard drive.  The computer has been reformatted more than two times and yet the problem continues.

It’s still at MacXperts…

And I actually JUST got a call saying they found the solution… wow. So Never asking what you think… of course they thought they had it figured out like four times already so… thoughts?

Blue Eyeball HD Webcam/Mic

I’ve been aching for an HD camera for a while now, and with a little bit of money left over at the university, I bought the Blue Eyeball “Super” HD Webcam.

It promised “Super High Definition Video” and superior audio recording. I’ve always heard great things about Blue Microphones and listened to episode 134 of MacBreak Weekly where it was Andy Ihnatko‘s “Pick of the Week”.

Ihnatko raved of the image quality and audio recording quality, and being a fan, I went along with it and bought one, without reading any reviews online.

So how much do I love the Blue Eyeball?

Ermmm, not so much.  More after the jump. Continue reading

Facebook, Yucky Advertising!

Gay With Genital Warts?Like seriously, Facebook, what’s going on here?

Yes, I’m gay but no I don’t have the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).  In fact, I don’t know anyone that does.

Never the less, “Gay With Genital Warts?”?  Does this medication not work for “Breeder With Genital Warts?”

Blech.  Whatever.  Total FAIL here.  Which is why I love the thumbs up/down option on advertisements.

This was a big ol’ thumbs down and why?  Because it didn’t pertain to me.  If this is what targeted advertising is coming to, count me out!

Now back to some Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire… hmmm, that song title is ironic…

UPDATE:

I’d only been away from my blog for a few minutes before another stupid Facebook advertisement showed up.  This advert was for a law office that, seems to at least, specialize in DWI/MIP arrests/tickets.

First off, advertising to college kids that there are people out there to get them out of their DWI/MIP offenses is awful.  DWI should require jail time.  You are lucky when you don’t wreck your car and kill.  DWI has no excuse. Period.  I’m sure we all have done it at one point and we were all so very stupid to do it.Mid-Mo DWI_MIP Lawyers

I have had a roommate who was notorious in his drinking and driving, and it ended up with him messing up the car he was driving more than once.  He is lucky there were no other people involved, who knows how that could have changed his life?

Maybe it was working in the emergency room of my university’s hospital that has me like this.

I will never forget the Sunday morning when I had three patients come into the ER via life flight helicopter.

This family was on their way to church when a drunk driver hit their car head on.  Killing one child instantly, severely injuring another and her father.  I remember seeing the father crying before his daughter’s bed after he was released from the hospital he was flown to and made it to our ER.

I learned that just a few months earlier he had lost his wife, their mother to cancer.  And now he had lost one child with the other one slipping further away every moment.

The drunk driver was ok.  He should be in jail for life, for ending two children’s life.  For destroying what was left of a father and his fractured family.

I think I’m done now.
