Real danger of a new media addiction

Last Saturday I went to brunch with Jimmy to Dottie’s True Blue Cafe. Brunch in San Francisco is a different animal than brunch most anywhere else. Actually, dining in San Francisco is unlike anything I’ve experienced most other places. That is to say, we are totally comfortable waiting an hour to get a table at a restaurant. Should the place have enough Yelp reviews, or bottomless mimosas, we’ll happily wait a few hours!

Dottie's True Blue CafeWe hit up Dottie’s True Blue Cafe, which only had a 45 minute wait, and made ourselves comfortable in line by updating Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare to share that we were trying a new brunch place, and that even at 9:15 AM there was a wait.  Continue reading

Resolutions and Revelations

I decided that one of my New Years resolutions…

Let’s stop there really quick. Yearly resolutions are about 90% total bull. I know that. I know that you are far more likely to be unsuccessful at a “resolution” if you put arbitrary timelines, start dates etc. But I digress…

I made a few including the following:

  • Post here more often.
  • Thinking positively.
  • Workout like I did when Max was my gym buddy.
  • Make more money doing what I want to do, not just making money to make it.
  • Take more photographs.

I realized tonight that I’ve put photography onto a back burner. I have stopped introducing myself as, “I’m Justin… yeah, I’m a photographer” and instead say, “I’m Justin… I help companies utilize social and new media systems and networks to reach customers, create transparency, build trust, gain respect and increase revenue.”

“I’m a photographer” isn’t nearly as big mouthful.

So in an effort to kill two birds with one stone, I will post here more often with a new photo every day. I promise it won’t turn into one of those annoying 365 photo blogs. Just a simple photo everyday of something that caught my eye. Whether the photo be from my nice camera or my iPhone camera (which is actually a pretty nice camera…)

I’d like to further challenge myself to taking each of the photos from the same place. Can I make 365 unique and interesting photos from my courtyard? How awesome would that be? If I miss a day, I miss a day. Giving up because one day I didn’t do what I wanted to do is insanity. It’s an excuse to give up. I will miss a day but, I will think positively, I won’t let it, let me down.

So, let this be the first one. The Image above is the night view from my courtyard. It is the view I see every night as I do the dishes. I’m totally ok with doing the dishes when that is what I get to see while I do it.

iPad at #GeekLunch

Today I joined Colby, @ColbyWG, and Zach, @DJ_Z at Campus Bar and Grill for another #GeekLunch, fun times, recollections of our Spring Break adventures and…

Ok seriously. We were there to play with Zach’s iPad.

It’s amazing, enough said.

I’m currently debating on whether I should wait for the 3G model or go ahead and pick up my pre-ordered iPad tomorrow from the bookstore. What do you think?

TwitterCounter.com Featured User

Sometimes, not even being a featured user on TwitterCounter.com can help you.  TwitterCounter claims an expected 150-5,000 follower increase over a period of a few weeks or months. Apparently for @GetOutofDebtGuy, that isn’t the case.

Moral of the story? Instead of throwing out $65-15,000 to gain followers, put out some quality content that gets you new followers, naturally.

Feast of Fools

So, my friend Nick Starr had the chance to be the guest of honor on the Feast of Fools Podcast last week.

In the episode, they took a question from me which was, “Hey Nick, what would we be doing had I been able to go with you?”

Well they quoted me differently making it sound like I was going to sleep with Nick, maybe they read it wrong.  They also took out words that made me sound like I couldn’t write proper English.  Hmmm.  It’s ok, I figure they just got it wrong since it was live.

But what actually bothers me is the part where Nick says I’m hot.  Well that didn’t bother me haha, it was when they went to my site and right off the bat said I didn’t have any pictures.  (The second post is a picture of me…)

When they found the picture Fausto or Marc stated that yes, I was hot but also that my picture was heavily airbrushed.

Not Airbrushed

Argh!  Why does that bother me so much?  I didn’t airbrush myself.  Oh well. Mostly it was all compliments and I absolutely adore Marc and Fausto’s show, it’s been on my podcast playlist since Day 1.

Still, I wouldn’t argue with some of you guys letting ’em know that the reason I don’t have lines and wrinkles in that picture is because I don’t have lines and wrinkles!  I’m barely 24 years old! You can find the post specific to this episode here.

In the end though, it’s great to be heard on a podcast you love so much. I’m not on Dawn and Drew at all anymore, need to catch up with them… And anything with Keith and the Girl has been on the forms or email but never on the actual cast.

It’s a great feeling to have people talk about you, even with some of the bad parts (misquote/airbrush). But to be called sexy and hot for the whole world to hear, that’s empowering haha.

I want to thank Nick for being so nice and saying such wonderful things about me on the show, and for keeping it down to about two minutes, any more and who knows what might have been said tee hee.
