iMac, Dead, Dying or… ZOMBIE!!!

Cheers

Cheers

If you were paying careful attention to my Twitter stream, you might have noticed a few to dozens of tweets about my iMac.  It’s had a rough year.  First it got bugs stuck in the screen…

And of course, there was the screen going bonkers, which was in no way connected to the bugs (it preceded the bugs)

This is the problem that no one seems to be able to solve.  Open any image in any photo editing program and make a marquee or crop selection.  A few seconds latter the screen goes crazy, this is a mild example.  Had I waited and taken a picture a few minutes later, the entire screen would have grown to look like the top of that image (which should be a picture or like a cup of coffee or something.)

The fact that taking a screen shot (using Skitch) picked up the problem is really interesting to me, seems like if it was outward delivering hardware issue (video card), it would show up wrong on the screen but correct on the screen shot.  An example would be when the video card of my MacBook Pro overheated

I ran my tests and everything was kosher.

So I brought the computer to MacXperts.  They have so far, over the past 5, yes FIVE, months, replaced the screen, the video card, the ram, the motherboard and the hard drive.  The computer has been reformatted more than two times and yet the problem continues.

It’s still at MacXperts…

And I actually JUST got a call saying they found the solution… wow. So Never asking what you think… of course they thought they had it figured out like four times already so… thoughts?

Nimbus Cloud Computer

Ohhhh, I want this.  But, I’m not really sure why I want it.  Basically its a workstation that you either pay $19.99/month to use, or it’s a workstation you pay nothing for in exchange of ads.

Nimbus Cloud Computer

You cannot load music onto it from CD’s, well you can load anything from CD’s since it doesn’t have a CD drive, just five USB drives.  It latches onto your high speed internet connection, connects to a mainframe computer and allows you to do most of what people do online without the hassles or expense of a full sized computer.  You just provide the monitor, USB keyboard and mouse, plug it in and apparently, you are good to go.

You can do almost anything on it that doesn’t require loading too much software, or hard drive space, or specialized hardware, or…  Well, I can’t really name all the limitations until they send me test system, hint hint.  They don’t really state the limitations, which isn’t really that unexpected.

You can get around the 2gb of hard drive space with an external drive and they infer that your printer should have no trouble with this unit.  Linux has never been more approachable for a n00b.

I say this is perfect for parents who want their kids to have a computer that

  1. Is cheap
  2. Is safe
  3. Won’t get them in trouble with the evil RIAA
Let’s hope that you don’t HAVE to use ScreenPC servers for the computer to operate, just in case the fold.

I’m Sick and Tired of…

Being sick and tired.

I went to urgent care today.  For about two weeks I’ve have been dealing with what I thought was a cold.  I got my flu shot this year so I wouldn’t have to worry about getting sick… Lull and behold, I have bronchitis.

Are you kidding me?  Ugh.  Luckily I caught it before it got too bad

So anyways, while I was waiting to get my four RX’s filled, I got a new aquarium for my goldfish with a nice filter and all that jazz.  The first aquarium I bought today had a leak so I had to return it.  I give major props to Columbia Pet Center.  They are incredibly knowledgeable about all things pet related and seem to care a great deal for their creatures, large and small.

The guy who helped me out there did a wonderful job of making me feel comfortable with my purchase of an aquarium (at $15 less than the other pet store) and power-wheel bio filter.  My goldfish is just loving his new space, ten times larger.

In a month they will test my water and let me know if I’m ready for any plants or other fish.  How professional.  PetCo or Pet’s Mart would sell me anything just to make a sell, never-mind the health of the fish.  Kevin brought me to this place a few years ago, thanks Kevin!

I also went to Best Buy to get yet another 1tb external hard drive.  I now have over 1.5tb of data on my iMac.  My external 1tb filled up with my iTunes library and Time Machine backups.  At first I had some trouble with my new drive but it seems to be working out just fine right now.  I have backed up my laptop and am currently moving the old Time Machine backups to the new drive.

It’s going to take a while…  Over 7 million files and counting?  I truly am a media whore.

UPDATE: I am now at over 10,000,000 files.  Holy crap.

UPDATE: It is still counting up after over seven hours and more than 29,000,000 files.  Something just isn’t right here.  There just can’t be that many Time Machine backups.
